Bernice Jane Widup, 93 of Kenosha, Wis., formerly of Plainfield, passed away peacefully, Thursday, May 31, 2018 at the St. Joseph Nursing Home of Kenosha. She was born December 1, 1924 in Fairmont City, Ill., to her loving late parents, Franciszek and Karolina Grzywacz. Cherished wife of the late Ray A. Widup, wedded on November 5, 1949. Beloved mother of Zachary Widup of Champaign, Kevin (Virginia) Widup of Madison, Miss., Denise Widup of Kenosha, Wis., and Rosemarie (David) Palmersheim of Franksville, Wis. Loving grandmother of Margaret (Kris) Wilson and Rachel (Cody) Tompkins. Great-grandmother of Julia and John Wilson. Fond sister of the late Mary Vickery, Joseph, Walter and Stanley Grzywacz. Dear sister-in-law of Reggie Grzywacz. Bernice was a long-time Plainfield resident and St. Mary Immaculate Church member since 1943. She worked as a beautician at Kelly’s Salon and Pink Poodle Salon in Plainfield. She also worked at the Goodie Basket as a hostess and cook. She worked at the Joliet Army Ammunition Plant making TNT blocks. Bernice was an active member of St. Mary Immaculate, serving in the Mother’s Club, on the luncheon committee and room mother for the school. She was a founding member of the Plainfield Civil Defense. She will be fondly remembered for her love of BINGO, roller skating (member of the Rolling Squirrels Club), baking and making doll clothes. She was known as “The Cross in my Pocket Lady,” making thousands of crosses and handing them out all over the Plainfield/Joliet area. Visitation is Monday, June 11 from 4-8 p.m. at Overman-Jones Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 15219 S. Joliet Rd., Plainfield. Mass of Christian Burial is Tuesday, June 12 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary Immaculate Church, 15629 S. Rt. 59, Plainfield.
