LaVern “Vern” Earl Youngs, 69, went to his eternal home Jan. 23 after a long illness. Vern was born Dec. 25, 1946, in Portage, Wisconsin, to Harold and Myrtle (Scharf) Youngs of Cambria, Wisconsin.
Vern attended Rio High School, served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War, worked for the Columbia County Highway Department for nine years, and Northeast Asphalt as a Plant Foreman for over 20 years until he retired due to a terminal diagnosis of cancer.
Vern was an active member of the Poynette & Arlington United Methodist Churches and Community Christian Church, the Lions Club, Curling Club, Masonic Lodge, and VFW.
He enjoyed camping, playing cards, going out to coffee with friends, curling, fishing, deer hunting, serving his community, spending time with his grandchildren and taking long rides on his Harley trike.
Vern will be deeply missed by his wife of 46 years, Joyce (Buskager) Youngs; son, Todd Youngs of Poynette, Wisconsin, daughter and son-in-law, Julie (Youngs) and David Girdwood, of Plainfield; grandchildren, Brett, Andrew, Alexa and Gabriel. He is preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Myrtle Youngs; mother-in-law, Wilma (Heames/Buskager) Thayer; brothers David and Wally; sister-in-law, Cathy; and four nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at Community Christian Church- Plainfield Campus, 13731 S. Route 30, #117, Plainfield, Saturday, April 23, at 4 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Carbone Cancer Center — 600 Highland Ave., Madison, WI 53792 or to the family.
