Janet C. “Jan” Sebby

Janet C. “Jan” Sebby (nee Hietschold), 89, a longtime resident of Plainfield, died Monday, October 30, 2017 at Presence St. Joseph Medical Center in Joliet. She was born May 4, 1928 in Joliet.

Beloved wife of Ralph K. Sebby, whom she married August 26, 1950, loving mother of Mark (Nancy) Sebby of Brighton, Mich., Philip (Tammy) Sebby of Plainfield, Priscilla (Steve) Weir of Laurinburg, N.C. and Jeff (Faith) Sebby of Fort Collins, Col., adored grandmother of Leif Sebby; Stephanie (Jonathon) Andrews and Sarah Weir; Lauren, Brody, Quinn and Phoebe Sebby, devoted daughter of the late Ralph and Mildred (nee Hamilton) Hietschold, dear sister of Lois (the late Richard) Moore of Plainfield, Raymond (the late Lottie) Hietschold of Lockport, and the late Ralph (the late Irene) Hietschold, sister-in-law of Marlene (Terry) Thurston of Spartanburg, SC and the late Richard (Margaret) Sebby, the late Marjorie (the late Gordon) Minor and the late RuthMary (the late Andy) Griparis, fond cousin, aunt, great-aunt and friend of many.

Jan grew up in Joliet, worked at the Joliet Arsenal during World War II and also as a nurses’ aide at St. Joseph Hospital in Joliet. She moved to Plainfield as a teenager and was a graduate of Plainfield High School, class of 1948. Jan went on to receive a BA in Education from the University of St. Francis in Joliet and taught in the Joliet School District for 25 years, teaching in District 86 in Woodland and Pershing schools. After retiring from teaching, Jan owned and operated Plainfield Floral & Garden with her husband, Ralph and served as president of the Plainfield Area Chamber of Commerce for 10 years. Jan was a current member of Three Rivers Church in Plainfield and a former member of the Evangelical Free Church in Naperville. Jan held a deep faith in God and was always active in her church. She led many backyard Bible classes for kids, held Youth for Christ in her home, worked with her husband at Cedar Lake as youth directors, and raised her family in the faith. She loved birds and was an enthusiastic fan of the Chicago Bears.

Memorial Visitation Friday, November 3 at Overman-Jones Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 15219 S. Joliet Rd., Plainfield. A celebration of Jan’s life followed with Rev. Eric Fornelli officiating.

Interment was private.
